I recently came across a remarkable blog, Considerings, committed to making the world a more positive place. And I believe we could definitely use a lot more positive in our lives!
I have decided to participate in the Ten Things of Thankful project they have encouraged. Taking the time each week to reflect on the good things in the past week and giving thanks for these gifts in my life hit a chord in me. And I hope it will also hit a chord with you. I think of this as “paying it forward” (one of my all time favorite movies). It is a small action that can yield unexpected positive results. Little seeds of thankfulness to sprout a more positive outlook, community and world. Here’s my first list:
- My husband who’s acts of service, discipline and love improve our life together and make my current transition possible.
- Friends who listen patiently as I talk and talk about my blog experiences, challenges and goals.
- My boot camp workout leader and fellow campers who encourage me as I return to the workouts after 5 months of physical challenges.
- The extraordinarily bright and talented ladies in my book club and their insightful and animated dialogue.
- The gentle rain that washed away the yellow-green pollen covering every surface and nourished emerging plant growth
- My bicycle buddy who pedals much faster than I do normally to help me reach my fitness goals.
- The invitation from a friend that got me back on the tennis court after a six month absence.
- Spending time on the phone with my daughter and hearing her joyful laughter, even during dark times.
- Goodwill and Where’d You Get That (www.where’dyougetthat.com) for offering reasonably priced, gently worn clothing.
- Getting a great deal on the purchase two kayaks (complete with paddles, seats and life vests) from a neighbor and supporting a fundraiser.
As I am prone to do, I took a look at my list and found some trends and insights. I noticed that I am thankful for the good as well as the challenging things that occur in my life. This was a surprise to me. Since I find myself decrying life’s hurdles. I also noticed that the people I encounter and spend time with make a difference and enhance in my life. This hasn’t been by design; it a notable benefit of human interaction and goodness.
Finally, as I reflected on my first list it occurred to me that in each and every circumstance there is a someone or group of people (and God) that I need to be sure to thank. Composing the list is the first step. Giving thanks to others completes the circle. I have work to do.
